DO YOU HAVE A GOOD IDEA FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF WEST ZEALAND’S RURAL AREAS? THEN LEADER+ MAY BE SOMETHING FOR YOU. LEADER+ is an EU initiative to further development in rural areas. It supports projects that in a new and different way can help to create a sustainable development of the local communities. The program is based on the so-called “bottom-up” principle. The development plan and projects are to be deeply rooted in the local community, and the distribution of economic resources is to be decided by a distribution committee with representatives from the area’s organizations, institutions, municipalities and the county. The program is one of EU’s structural fund programs. It will be in operation until the end of 2006. More information about the LEADER+ program in Denmark can be found at www.leaderplus.dk . Throughout the duration of the program period, the program is expected to initiate projects in the area within an overall framework of more than 50 million kroner. Half of this amount comes from support from the municipalities, the county, the Danish state and the European Commission. The remainder must be raised by the applicants themselves through self-financing, contributions in kind, loans and grants from private funds. The goal of the program is to help strengthen the area’s social and cultural assets and to create new activities, products and networks.
